Corianders on Christmas

December 6th, 2011
Subsonica is an Italian rock-techno band that was formed in 1996. They are from Turin, a city full of underground life and music. Sanremo Music Festival has been a crucial point for their career even if it celebrates the most classic and rhetorical Italian songs. Today Subsonica are well known for their innovative sound and for live performances usually completely sold out.
CharmingItaly.com introduces you Subsonica with their cover song Corianders on Christmas (original title Coriandoli a Natale) because it is a warm and enveloping melody and, obviously, it is not a conventionl Christmas song!

Ponte Milvio and the Love Padlocks

Ponte Milvio is a bridge of Rome. It has an historical and cultural importance for obvious reasons, but it is also well known as the Bridge of the Love Padlocks. A love padlock has ever been a symbol of everlasting love though there are no certain sources for the custom to affix them to a gate or bridge by sweethearts. What happened in Rome was that the Italian writer Federico Moccia told/invented in his book I want you this nice ritual and, from the the early 2006 love padlocks started appearing in Ponte Milvio. After about one year, the lamppost on the bridge partially collapsed due to the weight of thousands of lock and the habit had to stop.
What is the end of this story?
As the love always wins, Ponte Milvio has still attracting a lot of couples… their love symbols are affixed all around the bridge such as road posts or bins.

Enjoy the Season’s First Taste Treats

Olive Nolche, Apulia - Recipes

Fall is olive season here in Puglia. Wherever you go, as far as the eye can see, vast expanses of olive groves surround you. At this time of year, the trees are heavily laden with their valuable and tasty fruit, the mighty olive, source of both health and wealth. Besides being delicious both whole and in the form of oil, the olive is chockfull of vitamins, minerals and essential amino acids, and has historically been the main crop driving the local economy.

The first olive to mature each autumn is the Nolca, one of the few types of olive that can be eaten straight off the tree, without the various treatments necessary to make most olives edible. The Nolca contains less oleuropein, a powerful antioxidant chemical which give other olives their bitter taste. Science aside, all you really need to know is that they are delicious and are available right now!

The Nolca olive can be simply washed and eaten raw, ideally accompanied by freshly baked bread to help neutralize the slightly bitter aftertaste typical to all olives, but barely perceptible in this variety. However, the ideal way to prepare these taste treats is to fry them. No real recipe is necessary for this simple dish, just a few simple instructions.

Fried Nolca Olives

Ingredients

Nolca (or other sweet black olives) – Extra-virgin Olive Oil – Garlic – Chili Pepper – Salt

Directions

Pour a small quantity of extra-virgin olive oil into a frying pan and begin to sauté 1 whole clove of garlic and 1 small chili pepper. Quickly add the washed and thoroughly dried olives. Salt well and stir often. The olives are ready when they begin to soften.
