First Round Robin

The firs Round Robin is going on and the teams start to feel at ease in Sardinian waters. After the 5th racing day, Artemis still didn’t lose any competition and is on the top of the provisional ranking. Mascalzone Latino loses a point due to a collision occurred in the race against All4One, while Aleph has been given a three-point penalty after a collision during the race against Azzurra.

Free-time during the Trophy

During the Trophy people have the choice to make photos with the participants and to take a break in the many restaurants and Cafès, drinking a good espresso or eating a refreshing gelato. Not to be missed is a tour of the archipelago by boat, to visit the little enchanting islands which compose it. Of course, the best suggestion I can give to those who wish to relax is: put a book and some cool drinks in your bag, choose your favourite beach and enjoy Sardinian summer!!!

After relaxing on the beach, you can maybe feel like doing a tour in Costa Smeralda, the VIP favourite Sardinian resort. In this case, don’t forget that the Polo Gold Cup will start soon, on 29th May. You may take this opportunity to visit the area and to be present to this popular and exclusive competition.

Today: Auckland – Emirates Team New Zealand wins Round Robin of the Louis Vuitton Trophy Auckland

Round robin in the city of Sails: completed.

Waiting for the finals…

Auckland, New Zealand, hosts the second of five match regattas of the Louis Vuitton Trophy.  Racing started 9th March; the teams raced four matches a day (for a total of 7 days) in order to complete the Round Robin (RR), before starting the ladder elimination ending in the finals, which will take place on Sunday, 21st March.

Unbeaten until the 5th Race Day, Emirates Team New Zealand lost its first race on Day 6, against the French team  Aleph, in the only Regatta of the day: because of the strong wind, the Race Committee decided to stop the race for the day.

On day 7, the last of this round, Emirates Team New Zealand defeat the Russian Team Synergy and gains the first position, while the Italian team Mascalzone Latino gains the second position, defeating first the English TeamOrigin, and then the other Italian Team Azzurra during the rematch.

The Situation after Round Robin is the following:

1)    Emirates Team New Zealand (6 points)
2)    Mascalzone Latino Audi Team (5 points)
3)    All4One (4 points)
4)    Azzurra (4 points)
5)    Artemis (4 points)
6)    TeamOrigin (3 points)
7)    Aleph Sailing Team (1 point – The Umpires have deducted 1 point)
8)    Synergy Russian sailing team (0 points)

According to the MacIntyre System, the chosen format originally developed for Australian rugby, RR determines a ranking which is used for later eliminations.

During Round 1, competitors sail here a knockout series; the pairing is made using the ranking of RR: 1st vs. 8th, 2nd vs. 7th, 3rd vs. 6th and 4th vs. 5th.

Depending on the RR ranking, in Round 1 the teams will race as follows:

-    Emirates Team New Zealand vs. Synergy Russian sailing team (1st-8th)
-    Mascalzone Latino Audi Team vs. Aleph Sailing Team (2nd-7th)
-    All4One vs. TeamOrigin (3rd-6th)
-    Azzurra vs. Artemis (4th-5th)

The 4 remaining teams are paired again and will sail for Round 2, the semi-final and the Sunday final.

In the meantime, waiting for the finals, the America’s Cup trophy returns to New Zealand. The Cup, won last month by the American team BMW Oracle Racing , is arrived today; the public could admire it during the races of the Louis Vuitton Trophy.

I’ll keep you informed of the progress of the races in the next post, we’ll discover the winner team of the Louis Vuitton Trophy Auckland!

Louis Vuitton Cup 2010 – La Maddalena, Sardinia

February 17th, 2010

In 1983, for the America’s cup match, a trophy to the winner of the challenger selection series was offered by Louis Vuitton (challengers competing for the right to challenge the defender of the America’s Cup). Since 1983, the Louis Vuitton Cup has become one of the most prestigious competitions in yachting sport, transforming each Regatta Venue (independently from its previous sailing culture) into the protagonist for two weeks. In 2010, this will take place in Italy and particularly in an “island in the island”: La Maddalena.

Let’s remember the previous winners of the Louis Vuitton Cup:

Often, but not always, the winner of the Louis Vuitton Cup won then the America’s Cup.

After the change of venue concerning the G8 Summit (which was supposed to be in La Maddalena, in 2009, and was then transferred to L’Aquila, hit by terrible earthquake), La Maddalena island will finally have the opportunity to show its potentialities, by welcoming the second most important yachting competition in the world.

Next Louis Vuitton Trophy Regattas venues are:

-          March 9-21: Auckland

-          May 22-June 6: LA MADDALENA, SARDINIA

-          November 13-28: Dubai, UAE

-          January 9-24, 2011: Hong Kong

Maddalena Archipelago, National Park from 1994, is situated north-east of Sardinia, the second biggest Italian island after Sicily. The archipelago takes name from the biggest of its islands, La Maddalena, and is well known for the transparency of its water as well as for its uncontaminated nature.  To know more about the archipelago, just have a look on this.

The Louis Vuitton Cup will take place in the waters of the Archipelago and the emerald coast, and will be based in the old port of the ancient Navy in La Maddalena. Completely restored, it belongs to La Maddalena Hotel Yacht Club, a modern and prestigious complex supposed to open May 1st 2010.

We’ll keep track of the competition and we’ll give you all the information about how the Louis Vuitton Cup is going on in La Maddalena! Are you interested in it? Simply subscribe to our RSS !
