Rough Guide to PugliaRough Guide to Puglia

A different accommodation experience for your holiday in Puglia!

Puglia is home to many different types of accommodation, from five star luxury hotels to quaint little B&Bs. But why not choose something slightly different on your next trip to Puglia, and stay in one of the many masserie that are dotted all over the region?

Masserie in Puglia - Masseria Cervarolo, OstuniMasserie in Puglia - Masseria Cervarolo, Ostuni

The Puglia masserie are fortified farmhouses or country house estates, and most of them are set in working farms that produce wine, olive oil, or other local produce. Most of these farmhouses were built between the 14th and 18th centuries, and the fortifications were built to protect against pirate and Turk invasions! The Puglia masserie were originally used to house the farm workers and their families and often included courtyards and communal spaces where the families could spend time together.

Many were abandoned in the late 19th or 20th century, but luckily a lot of them have been snapped up, restored, and turned into wonderful places to stay. The masserie have now become a real symbol of Puglia, like the trulli of Alberobello. They are often found near the coast, between the cities of Bari and Brindisi, or on the Salento peninsula, which makes exploring locations such as Otranto and Lecce very easy indeed.

There are plenty of masserie to choose from in gorgeous Salento. The Masseria Montelauro can be found 2km from the popular Otranto, and has a pool, restaurant and fun cooking classes available, where you can try your hand at cooking with some typical local food. Another great location is Masseria Alchimia, which is located in the south of Salento. It has been renewed following the union principle between past and present and characterized by natural fabrics in a mix of warm colours.

If you’re all about the five star treatment, but still want a great masseria experience, then why not try the Masseria San Domenico, or the Masseria Torre Coccaro. Both are located near Savelletri (Brindisi) and both offer a golf course, swimming pool and spa. The Torre Coccaro also offers incredibly decadent rooms, some of which have private pools, Jacuzzis or fireplaces.
